Job Summary

The Estimator or Product Engineer in the Fastener Division is a key role in supporting the operational and growth objectives of the company.  This individual will be responsible for developing and optimizing the products and manufacturing techniques used in the manufacturing of products within the Fastener division.  General job duties can be expected to include leading product estimates of new products and large RFQ packages, on-going site level system support of documentation and routings, and project-based cost reduction initiatives/new product introductions.  This position requires strong organizational skills, an eye for detail and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cost Analysis and Estimation:
    • Analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to determine manufacturing strategy and locations.
    • Using defined tools, translate inputs and manufacturing process in comprehensive cost estimates
    • Assess material, labor, and equipment costs to produce accurate pricing
    • Communicate and collaborate with suppliers, customers, sales, site engineers and operations to clarify requirements and gather detailed information on product pricing
    • Identify areas within a product cost estimate where we can drive improvement to make MW competitive in the market
    • Develop and prepare detailed quotations for customers, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness
    • Maintain records and information within defined systems for traceability and conversion to production.
  • Operational Support
    • Update system records based on changes driven by customers and internal team members.
    • Follow divisional processes to conduct drawing and model updates including revision control
    • Overflow sustaining engineering work may also be funneled to the divisional Product Engineering team.
  • Project Based Responsibilities
    • New Product Introduction project support including
      • Working with site level engineering and quality teams, perform equipment install, debugging, and qualification
      • Process refinement and development in support of product goals and estimates.
      • Working with tooling engineers, perform tooling evaluation and modifications
    • Cost Reduction Project Support including
      • Manufacturing lean initiatives including value stream mapping, cycle time evaluation, product flow maps, etc…
      • Implement improved/novel equipment or techniques to increase throughput, reduce waste, or eliminate labor
      • Support cost savings analyses through product estimation and cost reporting.

Competencies

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with attention to detail
  • High proficiency in utilizing software including ERPs, estimating software, excel and Microsoft products
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Highly collaborative.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Self-motivation with the ability to evaluate priorities and aggressively pursue high value activities with minimal guidance

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
    • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in cost estimation or product engineering within a metal component, stamping or plastic manufacturing environment, preferably in the fastener industry or cold forming.
    • Lean Six Sigma experience.  Green belt preferred but not mandatory
  • Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes, materials, and costs related to production of metal products.  Preferably the technologies below or a subset of them
      • Stamping and fourslide
      • Machining
      • Heading and cold forming
    • Ability to analyze and understand prints.  GD&T knowledge preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods
  • Travel to a manufacturing site may be required on a project basis.  Maximum of 20% travel expected.
  • Occasional lifting of materials and equipment up to 25 pounds
